The Art of Mouna (Noble Silence): Neurological Reset & Decompression

Mouna (or *Mauna*) is the intentional discipline of vocal and sensory silence (Wikipedia)).

In classical Yoga and Vedanta, speech (*Vak*) consumes immense bio-energetic force (*Prana*). By refraining from speech and digital stimulation, practitioners conserve vital energy for spiritual insight.

What is Mouna (Noble Silence) in yogic sadhana?

Mouna is the intentional practice of vocal and mental silence. By refraining from speaking, reading digital devices, and external social communication, energy normally expended through speech (Vak Indriya) is conserved and redirected inward, resting the prefrontal cortex and reducing mental chatter (Chitta Vritti).

fMRI studies show that silent meditation reduces activity in the Default Mode Network (DMN), the neural circuit responsible for rumination (PubMed).

Levels of Mouna Discipline

| Level of Silence | Sanskrit Term | Scope & Practice | Primary Benefit | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | 1. Vocal Silence | *Vak Mouna* | Abstaining from talking, writing, & digital texting | Conserves vocal prana, reduces social reactivity | | 2. Sensory Silence | *Indriya Mouna* | Turning away from news, social media, & music | Calms sensory overload (*Pratyahara*) | | 3. Mental Silence | *Maha Mouna* | Stillness of thought waves (*Chitta Vritti Nirodha*) | Direct experience of witness Self (*Atman*) |
